It was her urge to create something
beautiful that brought Rupali Gupta
into the arena of jewellery
designing. Everything beautiful,
right from the stars, the galaxy, to
manmade constructions, a book or an
attire, inspire her. She tries to capture their
beauty in her jewellery.
“I like to work on a design in totality.
I am involved right from the concept, to
actual designing and interacting with our
marketing people to know how they would like to project a particular design,’’ says
Rupali, a Delhiite, who runs a company called Hitchhiker Design Consultancy
in Mumbai.

When she joined the National Institute
of Fashion Technology (NIFT), she
chose to do accessories. “This resulted in me
designing a lot of accessories -
leather bags, furniture, handicrafts,
semi and precious jewellery. It was
then that I realised that jewellery
designing was my forte,’’ recalls the designer, who has
worked with several
top jewellery companies
like the World
Gold Council, Signity, Gem Visions, Gitanjali Group and several others.
While she was the creative head at
Sama Jewellers, she realised she
wanted to go it alone in the world of jewellery.

“The kind of creative freedom I got at
Sama made me want to try something
on my own. And that is how I started
a company called Hitchhiker Design
Consultancy, which is a one-stop design
destination catering to the design needs of
global companies in the precious jewellery,
fashion accessories and lifestyle sectors,’’
explains Rupali.
Mostly working with gold and diamonds, especially white and black diamonds,
Rupali sometimes designs in silver also but so far has not got into platinum. “It’s not that I don’t like platinum, but I haven’t got an opportunity,’’ she clarifies.
While designing, she keeps the age
group of the customer in mind, “I can’t
conceive a hip-hop design for a 40-plus
woman!’’ she says. Next she takes into
consideration the lifestyle of the woman.
“The requirements of a working woman
or a collegian are different from those
of a homemaker,’’ opines the designer,
who has won several awards including the
Diamond Design Contest 2005 organised
by the Diamond Information Centre
(DTC). Her design has also been included
in the Signity Trend Book 2008t. |
