Imagine, you are in a room with one of the world’s biggest celebrities alone. Yes, I felt just like that when I spent some quality time with none other than the “Monalisa” this week. My job throws up these opportunities once in a while, which keeps me going. The watch world’s big daddy Nicolas Hayek Sr. (the owner of Swatch Group), pulled off yet another grand association for Breguet- this time with none other than the Louvre Museum in Paris, where Monalisa rubs shoulders with the likes of Venus de Milo and The Victory of Samothrace. Antique Breguets from the Museum collection of Breguet and the Louvre will be exhibited for common public till the 7th of September and to announce that Hayek Sr. invited some of us to Paris for a private preview at the Louvre.
I have been to the Breguet museum at Place Vendome before, but seeing the exquisite watches at the Louvre was a completely different experience. I fell in love with my all time favourite Breguet No. 5 all over again. Dinner under the Pyramid at the Louvre was the real icing on the cake.
Paris is a city of contrasts like all big metropolises should be. Haute Couture of Place Vendome rubs shoulder with the simplicity of a Café de Flore, which still gets the thinking minds together. While sipping my favourite red wine at Café de Flore with two of my friends- Prasanna and Moinak, I bumped into Suketu Mehta, the author of The Maximum City, an old friend of mine. I must say, Café de Flore at St. German cannot be missed even if you are not a Satre
The day after was yet another experience. I woke up early even after a very late night to just hop into the tube to visit the Père Lechaise cemetery to check out my favourite Jim Morrison’s grave. If you are crazy fan of the Doors, you can’t miss this. He, in case you have forgotten, was buried in his favourite city, Paris when he died there. One tip: be very clear about the location of his grave at the cemetery. It can get slightly confusing if you are not aware of the co-ordiantes.
The great Paris sale started this Wednesday. Everybody who I could see on the road was carrying bags, bags and bags of their splurge. I had an afternoon flight to catch, so my head told me to skip the entire dash to the Galeries Lafayette and go straight to the airport. Maybe, there is another lucky guy, who’s wearing my favourite Tom Ford glares, which I did not buy. Good luck my friend!
